I am Dr. Christina Urcinas Ph.D. I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist with over a decade of work in national and regional hospital systems, multi-disciplinary long-term care and rehabilitation facilities, and community clinics. I am currently based in Northern Virginia using primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy modalities specializing in various mental health concerns including life transitions and mood and anxiety disorders. My approach to therapy provides client-centered, evidence-based psychotherapy to individuals with a broad range of mental health needs. My clinical foundation is based on cognitive-behavioral interventions. I recognize and appreciate the relationship between mental and physical health, the psychological effects of stress and illness on functioning, and the educational and motivational interventions to improve health and maximize functioning. I work with adults experiencing various mental health concerns, including symptoms of depression, panic disorder, generalized and social anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, adjustment, and self-esteem issues, women's issues, caregivers, and other stress. I am collaborative with clients to help them develop the tools, resources, motivation, and perseverance needed to reclaim their lives and develop meaningful self-determined roles in the community. I have found my communication style is a good fit for adults who appreciate direct and thoughtful communication. I strive to create a safe environment for individuals to share and learn in order to chart a path forward. We can't change our past but I believe we have the power to ensure we live our best present and future. The ability to assist an individual on this journey and ultimately witness the re-discovery of oneself is an honor and drives me to this work. My approach to goal setting with clients is all about working together to define what you want to realistically accomplish in our time together. Over time, we will work together to set goals and track your progress. What you can expect from our first session together is for us to spend the majority of our time talking about how you have been feeling recently, and me asking questions to better understand some of why you may be feeling that way. The first session is about us building an initial connection and helping me get a sense of where we should go from there.

Have you hit a wall with therapy? Are you struggling to find hope? My name is Mikayla, and I've lived in and around DC for over 22 years. I provide holistic therapy for individuals with and without ketamine. My clients struggle with PTSD, suicidality, depression, anxiety, substance use, and co-occurring conditions. I also work with couples struggling to resolve and repair conflict. All are welcome here! I have experience working with people who struggle to fit in, people who use drugs, and people in non-monogamous relationships. My perspective is relational and systems-based. No part of us is separate from the rest; we are inseparable from our environments and each other. If you decide to work with me, we'll start by exploring the dynamics of your relationships and the relationship you have with yourself. We can identify and build on your strengths, manage and release the manifestations of toxic stress through the body, improve your emotional capacities, and build stronger authentic relationships. My approach weaves embodied mindfulness, liberation psychology, somatics, trauma-informed care, polyvagal theory, education, sound, and, for those who choose this route, ketamine. There is no "typical" session with me. Each person is approached as a unique being with a unique story. I have real-world experience and extensive training in multiple compatible approaches, which allows me to pull out the right tool for the right person at the right time. I maintain a laser focus on your obstacles and protective barriers while holding a lighthearted space where we are free to laugh about the absurdity of life. I reject hierarchy in therapeutic spaces and hold us as equals sharing the beauty and pain of healing in the human experience. How we work together is guided by your understanding of what you need. I believe you have the capacity to heal yourself. My role is to approach you with a delicate balance of compassion and honesty, maintain a safe and comfortable environment, witness your process, and ask the right questions.
No matter how much you do, that inner voice insists, “You could be doing more.” You convince yourself you just need to work harder, sleep a little less, and spread yourself more thin. Then you’ll finally feel that sense of accomplishment. But the more you do, the louder the voice gets. The weight of the constant stress is exhausting. The tension headache at the base of your skull won’t go away. You can’t control your emotions– the other day you blew up at your best friend. Your mother keeps calling; she’s worried about you. You’ve sacrificed so much, but don’t know what it’s all for. This can’t go on. It’s time to try something different. Using talk therapy with Internal Family Systems, we’ll explore the root causes of your issues and identify the patterns that no longer serve you. Utilizing Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and EMDR, you’ll learn to listen to your body’s wisdom and use it as a guide for healing. Together, let’s access your inner power and strength to create lasting change. Don’t waste another minute feeling lost and alone. Find your footing again. Take back control and start living as your true self. Untangle these big emotions so you can have more clarity and confidence. A life of peace and calm is possible, and you deserve it. I understand that seeking therapy can be daunting, and view therapy as a holistic process, striving to provide a warm, empathic, and accepting atmosphere, to support clients who are committed to making lasting change. I am Licensed Professional Counselor, and have extensive clinical experience working with individuals and couples struggling with relationship issues, trauma, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, low self-esteem, grief and loss, and questions of identity. I am passionate about helping couples and individuals grow and thrive, improving communication, working through trauma, and identifying and achieving goals. I received my Master of Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in 2011, and since then have undergone continued training specializing in trauma-informed approaches. I am a Gottman Method Level 1 trained therapist. I operate from a trauma-informed perspective recognizing that many people have had or currently experience trauma. I understand the need for emotional safety and trustworthiness in a therapist and work with clients to regain a sense of empowerment in their lives. My style is eclectic, but my work is trauma informed, using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help clients stop fighting against the pain of their past, and build rich and meaningful lives. For couples work, I pull strongly from the Gottman Method. I strongly believe that every person holds the capacity for growth, and can benefit from a trusting and supportive therapist to help them acknowledge and ignite that ability within themselves. I consider the client as the expert in their life and trust that a positive client and therapist relationship is key to facilitating change. Through a safe and professional relationship, the therapist can help the client deeply examine their life, and identify areas for change. Utilizing individualized treatment plans, I help clients develop goals tailored to their specific needs, and identify coping and management strategies to help clients regain a sense of control in life.
At Power Counseling PLLC, we are five different clinicians. However, we have one thing in common. We are all committed to satisfactorily resolve the issues that the client brings to the therapy room. We work with individuals, couples, families and groups, offering individual, couple, family and group therapy. Our primary therapy modality is cognitive-behavioral therapy, but we also use solution focused therapy a lot. We are located in Washington DC, but we are licensed to practice in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. Our director also offers clinical supervision for those who need it. Now, we offer only teletherapy. We believe that people can change, and that therapy is about assisting clients with what they need to change so that they can lead a healthy life and achieve their life’s goals. We assist our clients to attain self-exploration, resilience, empathy, and emotional empowerment. We firmly believe in the inherent inner powers of each individual to heal. We believe that everyone possesses the necessary internal resources to overcome emotional difficulty and flourish in life. This belief guides our approach to therapy. We strive to empower our clients, in a collaborative manner. Our goal is to provide a holistic, solution-focused, empathy-driven, and emotionally empowering therapy approach. That way, we support my clients to achieve the goals for which they seek therapy. We adopt an inherently collaborative approach. It’s like a partnership in which the client has a voice and can set the agenda for the sessions and take ownership of the outcome of our work together. We empower clients to make decisions about their care, with our guidance. The goal here is to work with the client to identify and implement effective solutions to the issues that they bring to the therapy room. As necessary, we educate and guide our clients to use internal and external resources available to them to heal. We work to empower clients to make decisions and take actions that align with their values and aspirations.
The decision to begin therapy and actually schedule an intake appointment is the hardest step in the process. For many, making that first phone call can take years. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, obsessive compulsion (OCD), relationship issues, or the impact of addiction, the process can feel overwhelming. You don't have to navigate it alone. Helping you feel at ease during this process is one of our top priorities. At Premier Wellness Center, we utilize a client-centered approach to meet your individual needs. Finally get unstuck from your anxious thoughts! You need a break, and you deserve therapy that's tailored to you. Some of the evidence-based practices that we utilize are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure response prevention (ERP), and trauma-informed strategies, among others.
I counsel individuals, families, couples, and children. My specialties include depression, anxiety, trauma, self-esteem issues, relationships concerns, family conflict, and grief. My goal is to help clients better understand themselves so that they can improve their relationships and quality of life. I tailor my approach to the needs of each client, responding to their own unique challenges and personality. I do not use a one-size-fits-all approach. People sometimes struggle to understand their distress, behavior, and patterns. By offering a safe, thoughtful environment, I empower my clients to cultivate a deeper understanding of their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, enabling them to identify the issues that undermine their quality of life. We live together in the same society, but we each experience life differently, and everyone faces challenges that can make leading satisfying and happy lives more difficult. Accessing your inner strengths is possible, and this empowerment can help to resolve your pain, suffering, and confusion.
If you’re looking for therapy, you may be feeling discouraged, misunderstood, or unsure how to repair the emotional distance that’s developed between you and your partner. Maybe you love each other deeply, but can’t seem to stop the cycle of miscommunication or conflict. I understand how painful that can feel—and I want you to know that healing and connection are possible. My work focuses on helping couples rediscover their friendship, deepen their emotional intimacy, and learn skills that allow them to navigate differences with compassion and respect. Drawing from the Gottman Method and Prepare-Enrich, I use evidence-based approaches to help you understand what’s really happening beneath your interactions and to practice new ways of communicating that bring safety, empathy, and hope back into the relationship. You’ll find my style to be warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. Together, we’ll explore the patterns that keep you stuck, while also identifying the strengths that can move you forward. I believe therapy should be both a space for insight and for action—a place where couples can learn to listen, forgive, and rebuild a bond that reflects the best version of who they are together. All sessions are virtual telehealth, allowing for greater accessibility to therapy services, and are convenient for most people. My practice provides a confidential, compassionate space for couples and individuals seeking to strengthen their relationships and emotional well-being. Call or email to book your appointment today.
I believe in creating a safe and supportive environment that allows each person the freedom to experience and work through problems, develop solutions, and get constructive feedback at the same time. As a clinical psychologist and counselor with over 30 years of experience, my work with individuals and couples allows personal and relational strengths to become resources and tools for positive life changes.
