Emotions are perfectly normal! The difference between feeling depressed or anxious comes from our interpretation of these very emotions. I work with adults, children and adolescents for couples or individual counseling. I appreciate working with young people by assisting them in understanding their emotions and what they mean. There are various therapeutic modalities I utilize, including art therapy, as a way to connect behaviors to feelings and sports metaphors for visualizing change. Using this process, my clients increase self-esteem and self-control. My goal is to uncover the strengths individuals possess even if the present life circumstances may feel overpowering. My approach with my clients is Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. So what exactly does this mean? Simply put, our thoughts affect the emotions we experience every day. These particular thoughts reflect individual beliefs we have about society, relationships, career, love, family and general self-image. This process affects and motivates our behaviors. In our modern world, children grow up in a culture that is alien to most adults. My interventions help to create and facilitate effective communication methods so that this particular cultural divide is lessened between child and parent. I can truly teach you how. You and your child will be better off for it.

Conflict with your partner or spouse? Unproductive communication? Recurrent episodes of anxiety or depressed mood? Over consumption of alcohol andor substances in an attempt to self medicate against your out of control emotions? These and many other mental health challenges are both treatable and resolvable. In my 35+years as a therapist to residents of the greater Fox Valley area I have observed that most of my clients choose therapy when they have utilized and exhausted all coping tools and problem solving strategies. As therapist it is my role to facilitate the increase of both coping tools and problem solving skills. As a solution focused therapist I work with my clients to identify and define target problems. Most importantly, we determine outcome goals. I encourage clients to identify and validate the unique strengths each has and apply those traits to increase their problem solving options and coping tools. Growing those tools is of life long benefit to my clients.
Thank you for visiting. While it may be difficult for you to seek help for yourself or your family, my goal is to work together in a supportive and encouraging way to meet your needs. Part of the therapeutic process will be to learn about what is challenging you and to emphasize on your strengths. With over 20 years of professional experience, and as a former classroom teacher and school counselor I have developed my practice and included therapists to focus and specialize in working with school-aged children and adolescents to overcome challenges while providing support and psycho-education for the entire family. Some of my previous professional experience includes extensive university research in psychology, inpatient mental health settings, classroom teacher, school counselor, long-term care, and private practice. My areas of expertise, include but are not limited to, anxiety, school refusal, depression, attentional issues such as ADHD, anger, behavior problems, divorce, academic challenges, OCDperfectionism, self-esteem, dual diagnoses, coping skills, parent coaching and support, social skills, and screen-time dependence and overuse.
My primary therapeutic orientations are cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused therapy; however, I strongly believe that it is essential to meet you "where you are at" using my developed professional skills to provide you with a therapeutic orientation necessary to move you toward a place of peace, healing, and feeling of stability.
