Hello, my name is Dr. Pamela Shannahan, I am a Doctor of Behavioral Health and a Licensed Professional Counselor. I have been working in the counseling field since 2006 with focus on person centered, trauma informed counseling. I work with people of all ages of the life spectrum. I have specialties in infant and early childhood mental health to include parenting education and support; end of life counseling for patients as well as their families; individuals, couples, and families experiencing life/relationship challenges and mental/behavioral health struggles. I work in several modalities and often a combination of them: CBT, DBT, and Behavioral. My focus is always person centered, systematic, and trauma informed.
My goal as a therapist is to help individuals and families achieve greater levels of wellness. None of us can control all of the situations we face in life. However, it is possible to develop a sense of wellness that goes beyond daily circumstances and allows you to feel joy, even in difficult times. I help clients to build the tools and insight needed to identify and overcome current roadblocks while better utilizing strengths. I use specifically designed experiences in sessions to help make therapy useful, motivating, and memorable. I also help families through a specific skills training to build healthy conflict skills. Conflict is often unavoidable, but it can be done in a healthy way. Contact me to see if the services and experience I provide are a good fit with what you are hoping to achieve.
I am passionate about helping people get what they really want for themselves. I use a non-judgmental compassionate approach that encourages self- care, learning skills to let go of worry, shame and guilt. I provide a guide to self- acceptance that allows people to naturally grow and change, welcome new challenges, have more freedom. My purpose as a therapist is to provide a safe, accepting, genuine environment to help people realize their goals. It is my job to genuinely listen, listen some more, validate a person's thoughts and feelings, help identify strengths and challenges, provide education, suggest ways of thinking and behaving, ask good questions, and always respect the answers. I think of therapy as teamwork and a wonderful exercise in cooperation. For the last 17 years I have had the privilege of seeing many people meet their goals and really come into their own. It continues to give me a profound sense of satisfaction. I would be honored to be a part of your journey.

Our Denver therapists are experts in helping clients build self-awareness in order to address the root of their problems through EMDR. Good therapy often involves a multifaceted approach to get to the core root of problems. More than "talk-therapy" our approach involves building safety, learning tools for self-regulation, healing old wounds (trauma), and integrating these treatment gains for a strengthened sense of core identity.
Are you wanting different but keep repeating the same patterns? Do you feel stuck? Do you notice yourself feeling alone, withdrawn, andor anxious? Are past relationship wounds feeling impossible to overcome? Are your emotions causing overwhelm? Are you craving deeper connection and meaning in your life and relationships? Relationships are the most powerful and impactful contributor to our lives, and this includes the relationship to self. I help individuals, couples, and families build a more fulfilling and intentional life, working through the barriers that have led to disconnection from yourself and within your relationships by creating new ways to connect to self, others, and their goals. I believe each client has inherent wisdom, resiliency, and resources within themselves, and my job is to help clients tap into that. My goal is to go beyond the symptoms to uncover and address the root issues causing dissatisfaction, bridging the gap between where you are and where you would like to be. I use an integrated approach of emotionally-focused therapy (EFT), internal family systems (IFS), narrative therapy, and brainspotting. As I strongly believe that true change happens when the nervous system is also addressed, I integrate somatic work in session where possible to build on the mind-body connection. At the core of my work as a relationship therapist is attachment; I view symptoms you are experiencing as adaptions to survive and manage the systems and relationships you've experienced andor are currently in.
Life has a way of forcing us to confront things which we believed we already overcame. Sometimes we look at ourselves and think, "how did I get here?". We can become so complacent and comfortable with discomfort that it becomes our new normal, forming our views and behaviors without our knowledge it's even happening. Sometimes we all just need an accepting and neutral person to process life with in order to regain control and understanding. We will work together to build respect and trust. I believe that counseling is not giving a hand to a person sitting in the mud, it's sitting in the mud with them and getting out together. My greatest strength as a counselor is my genuine acceptance of every client in a truly non-judgemental manner. I have successfully worked with many clients with a plethora of presenting concerns. I build trusting, open, and honest relationships with clients first, in order to facilitate growth and change. I know how difficult it can be to share a struggle with someone, I have been there myself, but know that each step taken is progress in the right direction. Give yourself credit for getting this far! I would love to chat to see if we are a good fit or if there's anything I could do to help find your best fit with your journey in counseling.
My style as a therapist is warm, compassionate, and deeply supportive, while also being direct and bold (at times). I recognize the importance of creating an inviting space where you feel truly heard, and empowered to explore what’s on your heart. I specialize in working with soulful, self-aware women who may feel anxious, overwhelmed, or codependent. You might desire deeper, more meaningful relationships but find yourself trapped in old patterns or beliefs that no longer serve you. With a background in traditional therapy and a personal interest in spiritual healing practices, I’m able to blend practical tools with deeper emotional work. I help you uncover the unconscious beliefs that may be holding you back while we explore the root causes of your anxiety, self-doubt, and patterns of behavior, using a combination of somatic work, inner child healing, and attachment-based techniques to bring lasting transformation. I know what it’s like to feel stuck, and I’ve spent years studying and integrating tools that have helped me and countless others find greater peace, confidence, and alignment. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, or simply feeling disconnected from your true self, I’m here to guide you toward a more fulfilling life. Together, we’ll work at your pace to create meaningful, lasting change that feels both empowering and authentic. If you’re ready to reclaim your sense of self and step into a life of deeper connection, purpose, and joy, I’d be honored to support you on that journey.
