Emotions are an important part of life, and help us to connect with others. Sometimes our experiences with intense emotions can take away from our ability to clearly communicate with each other or appreciate ourselves. Do you find it difficult to enjoy life in the moment? too focused on the past or worried about the future? Do you wish you could connect with your family or partner in a way that doesn't lead to conflict or slammed doors? Whether you are experiencing relationship conflicts, depression, anxiety, anger, feelings of low self esteem or sex related concerns, your feelings do not have to control your life. We help clients move past barriers that keep them from being the best they can be, by helping them better understand themselves. We specialize in sex therapy, anxiety, LGBTQ+, mood disorders and interpersonal conflict. Clinical Supervision is available to LPC and LMFT Residents completing licensure requirements. Through our work together you will be empowered to make the changes needed to live a more satisfying, authentic and fulfilling life. You do not have to navigate the path of healing alone. Together we can help you recover motivation, perspective, and joy!
ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS!!! TELEHEALTH and INDIVIDUAL Therapy AVAILABLE!! Since 1994, my systemic training has enabled me to specialize in treating issues such as mood disorders (depression), anxiety, grief & loss, divorce separation, relationship, stage of life, motivation and family of origin issues. Psychotherapy is meant to address the roots of mental and emotional struggle. We will focus on the holistic aspect of your life to equip you to make the effective change you desire. Together we can explore your strengths and challenges, discovering over time what motivates you and helps you thrive. I have a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Chapman University. My Masters program had a family systemic emphasis, but also equipped me to effectively address the complex and interwoven issues that individuals face. I have over 20 years experience working with clients of all ages. It’s essential that we look at all the varied influences on life that impact thoughts and behavior. No one lives on an island and there are many influences that directly affect how we feel and what we do. We believe it is important to consider these influences during the counseling and treatment process.
One of my favorite quotes is: "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." To me, life is a journey. There will be many bumps, bruises, and obstacles along the way. That's okay. It's how you overcome those hurdles that count. Some need more assistance than others on this journey, and that's okay too. My approach is to promote healing and personal growth and development along this journey called life. I do not claim to have all of the answers. I believe that everyone is the expert of their own lives. My role is to assist you with getting out of your own way and discovering the path that you want to follow.
My name is Kristen Johnson, and I specialize in working with young adults and adults who are struggling with depression, anxiety, adverse childhood experiences and trauma-related symptoms, attention-deficit hyperactivity (ADHD), and communication and relational issues. I have worked in a variety of settings, including residential, wilderness, and private practice for the past 10 years. I am currently a licensed LMHC in Hawaii and LPC in Virginia. I am also able to offer coaching services all over the country and internationally. I am passionate about helping people heal and grow. I utilize a whole person approach, looking to integrate the mind, body, and soul to provide a healing experience through evidence-based practices such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), motivational interviewing, expressive arts, positive psychology, Internal Family Systems, and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). I am collaborative and interactive in session. I understand that you are the expert in your own life. I am currently enrolled in a Jungian PhD program and that is influencing my approach to therapy and life as well. If you are looking to do deeper work, contact me.

Suffolk residents often seek therapy for anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, work-life balance concerns, and trauma recovery. The demands of modern life, combined with the unique stressors of living in a growing community, can impact mental health in various ways.
The local climate and lifestyle factors in Suffolk can influence well-being. While the warm Southeast weather offers many outdoor opportunities, the humid summers and hurricane season concerns from June to November can create additional stress for some residents. Many find that therapy helps them develop resilience and coping strategies for both daily challenges and seasonal concerns.
Suffolk therapists use several proven approaches to help clients achieve their mental health goals. Different types of therapy offer unique benefits depending on your specific needs and preferences.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps identify and change negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety and depression. This evidence-based approach is particularly effective for managing stress and developing practical coping skills.
Solution-Focused therapy emphasizes your strengths and helps you envision positive changes in your life. This approach can be especially helpful for those dealing with relationship challenges or major life transitions.
Psychodynamic therapy explores unconscious patterns and past experiences that may influence current relationships and behaviors. Many find this approach valuable for deeper self-understanding and personal growth.
Suffolk therapists also offer specialized services including couples counseling, family therapy, trauma treatment, and support for specific populations. Whether you're seeking individual therapy or relationship counseling, qualified professionals are available to help.
Our directory makes it easy to find help by connecting you with therapists who match your specific needs and preferences. You can search by specialty, insurance accepted, and therapeutic approach to find the right fit.

Getting started is straightforward—browse therapist profiles, read about their approaches, and reach out to those who seem like a good match. Most therapists offer brief consultations to help you determine if they're the right fit for your needs.
Cost concerns shouldn't prevent you from accessing mental health support. Many Suffolk therapists accept insurance, offer sliding-scale fees, or provide payment plans to make therapy more accessible. Affordable therapy options are available for those who need them.
Additionally, some community organizations and employee assistance programs provide mental health resources. Don't hesitate to ask potential therapists about their payment options and any available financial assistance programs.
If you're having difficulty finding the right therapist in Suffolk, consider expanding your search to nearby areas. The Hampton Roads region offers many qualified mental health professionals within a reasonable distance.
Seeking therapy demonstrates strength and self-awareness. Whether you're dealing with immediate concerns or working toward long-term personal growth, professional support can make a significant difference in your well-being.
