Hi I’m Elsa (she, they), a NYC clinical psychologist specializing in life transitions, identity, and spirituality (meaning, purpose, and connection). I’m also passionate about serving communities that have historically experienced barriers to whole-person care including LGBTQ+, BIPOC, Asian American, and neurodivergent (gifted, 2e, autistic, highly sensitive) teens, adults, partners, and families of all kinds. My practice integrates cultural diversity, health psychology, and identity development in exploring meaning, skills enhancement, and values based living. I also believe that healing must be contextualized by systemic factors that impact each person’s unique struggles and strengths. Would you like to improve your sense of well-being, clarity, and purpose, and improve relationships, so you can feel well-being and achieve your goals in life? You can do so! And with decades of work with organizations, I work with executives, leaders, and business owners to find more fulfillment in personal life and more success in the workplace. *** Accepting insurance that provides out-of-network coverage (PPO and POS plans); also accepting self-pay. *** You can accomplish this through our work together. As a result of expanding your insight and connecting to your own energy, you can reduce stress, improve harmony of mind and body, and gain the joyfulness and the focus needed to feel fulfillment, deepen relationships, and reach your goals. We have open conversations where all your thoughts and experiences are welcome, and we can focus on areas that show laden emotionality and potential for your growth and increased self-acceptance. It is like opening a good door in your awareness that may never have been opened before. As trust develops, you will be able to speak more and more freely and connect on the issues that have the most impact for you. I also engage to question ideas that seem to be misunderstandings or self-harmful, in order to help you find more clarity and joy. Clients report feeling seen and heard, and feeling relief of anxiety, depression, and phobias as their true needs and experiences are being heard and responded to.
My approach is the product of over a decade of experience working collaboratively with clients in an environment of non-judgement. I believe in taking an introspective and collaborative approach when working with adults and adolescents. I believe this kind of treatment approach allows the patients to recognize their own ability to heal based on their own experiences and judgement. Every day we bear the burden of deep emotional wounds and pain that can often cause us to become disillusioned with ourselves, others and the world at large. Avoiding these struggles is a natural way of coping for most of us. But despite the temporary relief it brings, coping in this way often maintains unhealthy and irrational beliefs, negative feelings, and unproductive, or even destructive, behaviors. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is the healing factor and work to be authentic, transparent as well as professional. By providing a safe, supportive and compassionate environment, my clients can find the strength to explore and process their issues without judgement, being stigmatized or pathologized. Encouraging and empowering clients to turn towards and explore these areas of difficulty in their lives can lead to lasting change and new ways to relate to themselves, others and the world.
Born in some respects from my wartime Military experiences, as well as from an amazingly dedicated and compassionate mother who has dedicated her life to others, my early influences have created a passion in me to help others. When they share their experiences in treatment, I feel humbled and invigorated and truly where I am supposed to be. My years of experience directing the largest State operated children's psychiatric outpatient program and supervising 70 professional staff have afforded me invaluable perspective as well. This exposure has also affords me extensive knowledge of community support systems, both Inpatient and Community based.
You are taking an important step in healing and growth that will enable you to make more positive choices moving forward. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety, grief or loss, having relationship difficulties, demonstrating communication problems or just feeling "stuck," contact me at Three Steps Forward to discuss how counseling can help you. My mission is to provide a counseling experience that is comfortable, soothing and empowering. Each session is tailored to your particular needs. Together, we will clarify what you hope to gain from this experience overall. I understand that counseling may be the first opportunity for you to feel truly heard and understood. I will listen to what you say in session, as well as what you don't say, and I'll be mirroring that back to you. I can help you move past the depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. We will work together to challenge the maladaptive stories and unhealthy messages you've been carrying around with you to develop a healthier, more encouraging script that will spur you to move forward, make conscious choices, and note your progress throughout. I favor an active approach to therapy and employ many cognitive-behavioral techniques as well as an incredibly impactful tool called Rapid Transformational Therapy which incorporates Hypnosis.
I work with people who want to understand the connections between past experiences and patterns in their current lives to have more satisfying relationships. The people I work with want to feel connected to others, repair past relationships, participate in corrective and reparatory experiences, understand their feelings, actions, and thoughts, and be at peace with themselves.
Embarking on the journey of self-discovery and healing is a courageous step, and I am honored to accompany you along this path. I have extensive experience in addressing various mental health challenges including but not limited to Depression, Anxiety, Mood Disorders, ADHD, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, trauma and anger management. Moreover, as a bilingual therapist, fluent in Spanish, and culturally competent, I recognize the importance of providing therapy in a language and cultural context that feels comfortable and relatable for you.
