Hi there! I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who loves working with couples and families, especially those who are LGBTQ+, neurodiverse, and navigating ENMpoly relationships. As someone who’s personally part of all three communities, I truly get it. I’m here to offer a warm, open space to explore your unique relationship dynamics, celebrate your identities, and build deeper connections. Let’s work together to create the life and relationships that feel authentic to YOU!
Hi! I'm Dr. Dave McNew. I am a licensed clinical psychologist helping those with marginalized identities to heal chronic struggles with complex trauma, anxiety, and depression. I use my passion for depth work, mindfulness, and self-compassion to build space in which you can know yourself more fully and live more authentically. I help to cultivate more safety and joy in your relationships with others, and with yourself. I make space for you to face the parts of yourself that are hardest to feel. Where there was pain and confusion, I help you find greater calm, peace, and connection. I offer depth-oriented, compassionate, and mindful therapy to transform your relationship with the world within and around you.
**ACCEPTING NEW IN-PERSON AND TELEHEALTH CLIENTS** Though I work with a wide range of clinical issues, I have a passion for working with clients to heal the wounds of abuse, other traumas, or narcissism; work through family-of-origin and attachment issues; liberate from the confines of anxiety, panic, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (or tendencies); repair and heal from relational issues; develop effective boundary-drawing; transform self-concept and self-esteem; and grow to find peace, joy, purpose, and overall wellness. I offer a compassionate understanding of who you are, how you show up in the world, and how you experience people, events, and the world around you. I work with you to identify and build on the strengths within you while developing new strategies and uncovering new insights to help you heal, grow, and flourish. I am nurturing while also able to challenge long-held beliefs and patterns, which may be keeping you stuck or holding you back from the life you want to live. I wish you well on your journey!
***I have immediate availability!*** I have spent most of my adult life working with children who have experienced trauma or neglect. Working with this population led me to find creative approaches for helping challenging children. I have done a lot of work with classroom management and helping children who struggle to stay focused at school. Using play and a brain-based approach, I can help parents and children work together to overcome challenges. My background in ethical non-monogamy and couple's therapy has helped me to create a system of helping people who want to expand their relationships into something that is more fulfilling. I work with couples and polycules to work through hard feelings, bring you back to feeling secure in your connection, and work on dismantling the socialization of monogamy. I help people figure out what their needs and wants are so that they can effectively communicate them and have the unique and fulfilling relationships that they want.
My goal as a therapist is to help clients create lives that express who they truly are as whole and complex human beings. When we feel cut off from others or from ourselves, our innate sense of wholeness can get lost beneath unbearable aloneness. But psychotherapy can integrate the many parts of our brains and ourselves. This is a collaborative process that can heal old wounds by inviting us to experience ourselves in new ways, within the relationship we build with a warm and compassionate therapist. Therapy is a partnership, built on safety and acceptance. It invites us to rediscover the parts of ourselves we had to disown as children in order to keep our caregivers close; to learn new skills to handle grief and distress; to build healthier, more nurturing relationships; and to gain access to our own direct experience of the world, perhaps for the first time. I nurture this partnership with clients by recognizing that each individual possesses the wisdom he or she needs, as well as the innate capacity to love, to connect, and to thrive. I see the work clients and therapists do together as a celebration of and reconnection to the deep selves within us all. I know from experience that coming to rest on the true ground of our being, the amazing moments when something inside says, Yes, this is me! is the most powerful source of healing and growth.
You’ve managed trauma in the past, but recently your coping tools may feel worn out. Maybe you notice overwhelm, disconnection, or patterns that aren't working anymore. Perhaps you've hit what feels like an emotional or physical wall. Our minds are impressive in the way they protect us from unbearable experiences with anxiety, dissociation, and even psychosis, yet those same defenses can also hold us back. Whether your trauma comes from a complex childhood, a single event, or navigating the challenges of living in a neurotypical world, therapy can help you honor your survival, loosen the grip of the past, and build a life with less distress shaped by choice. Together, we'll connect how what has happened to you has a profound impact on the way you see yourself, and what you expect to receive from others. We'll think about emotions as internal messages, and explore how our bodies hold and express these messages in very real ways. We'll create a calm, safe place to listen for what you need to heal. Research has shown that the "fit" between you and the therapist you choose is even more powerful than the specific type of therapy. Let's connect on a free consultation call where I can hear what's really going on for you, and we can see if we're a good match. Even if I’m not the right therapist for you, I'll help you find one who is.
You want to feel like yourself again, confident, and like you can trust the people in your life. The way you’ve gone about trying to manage your stress isn’t working anymore and you’re ready for something new. As your therapist, I will get in the mud with you. We will help you walk out of the dark hole you find yourself in, and guide you toward the self you want to be. . In this space, it’s safe to let out, yell, cry, or depressurize what is holding us up. Being authentic means taking healthy risks and shedding what doesn’t work anymore. The future looks bright, my friend. I’m ready when you are. I specialize in mens issues, young men, and adolescent boys because I know what it’s like to struggle as a man, but more than anything, I know what it’s like to be on the other side of it too. Let me help you get there. In this space, you don’t have to suppress or deny what you feel and we are authentically ourselves, whatever that looks like. While I specialize in mens issues, I see clients from a variety of backgrouds. I am here to help those that are in need. The future looks bright, my friend. I’m ready when you are.
GROWTH Everyone goes through painful times. These times leave different marks on different people. It’s time to get healing for the pain and help to move on. TIME TO HEAL Through seeing the effectiveness of LifeSpan Integration in my clients’ lives, I have made LI my main treatment modality. LI is a gentle therapy that focuses on neural integration and rapid healing in clients of all ages and is effective with a broad range of issues. My experience includes opportunities to work cross culturally (through interpreters), working with children in schools, working with adults coming out of inpatient care and mental hospitals, and working in traditional outpatient counseling settings. Through these different experiences, I am now focusing my counseling practice working with adults primarily with trauma and anxiety. EXPECT GREAT THINGS Time to dream. Time to dream of a time when painful memories do not trigger painful emotions and physical responses. Time to dream of a time when anxiety is an occasional difficulty and then like a large, puffy, cloud continues to wander on by…. It takes work, but healing is possible.
I use a psychodynamic, relational approach to therapy. This means I'm interested in helping you safely examine the ways in which your early experiences may be shaping your emotions, worldviews and relationship patterns. I'm committed to creating a secure therapeutic connection with you. I believe our connection can serve as a crucible for your healing and transformation. Within the safety of our relationship, I can assist you with exploring and understanding your inner feelings and needs, while helping you link new insights with effective self-care skills. Depending on your inclinations, we may focus on a single, specific challenge, or we might explore your circumstances more broadly. My primary interest is in your holistic healing and growth, and I consider it an honor to be a part of such a personal and transformational process.
