Welcome! I'm Rebecca Perkins, a Licensed Professional Counselor who is passionate about helping others take the first steps toward making changes to feel more empowered and experience healing in their lives. It takes courage to seek a more fulfilling life as well as to take the first steps towards making a change. If you are ready to take that step, I am here to support and empower you. My approach is client centered utilizing Attachment Theory and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I strive to empower individuals to make progress to their individualized goals. I am a strong believer mental health symptoms are not defining of the individual and can be managed through evidenced and strength based therapy modalities. Seeking therapy can feel scary, but it is a safe place to heal and grow. In our sessions together, you'll be met with compassion, kindness, and evidence-based practices to overcome the challenges you want to change. I work with individuals who experience symptoms of depression, anxiety, ADHD, stress, and life transitions. I help individuals to navigate these situations as well as form new strategies to cope with symptoms and empower the individuals to have more control over their lives. When one feels in control of their life, they no longer feel controlled by symptoms. My communication style is warm, genuine, interactive, calm, and friendly. I often use humor in sessions to help individuals feel comfortable. I want individuals who work with me to feel as though we can discuss anything comfortably. I actively work in therapy sessions to meet your specific needs and help you arrive at insights. We will work together to implement strategies and tools you can begin using immediately. I became a therapist because I enjoy working with others. As a volunteer, hearing others’ journeys provided me the opportunity to further appreciate the resiliency and growth individuals can make in their own lives. As a therapist, working with individuals to support them in achieving their goals has very rewarding. I believe it is important for myself and the individual to work together to form goals the individual wants to achieve in therapy. As therapy progresses, we will work together to track the progress of the goal and re-evaluate as needed. Every individual has an unique story and deserves an individual approach to treatment. In our first session, I want to hear your story, hear how you are feeling, and hear about your thoughts. The individual can expect me to ask questions to gain a better understanding of them. Our first session is important because it is our first connection, the beginning of start our relationship, and the starting point for the goals the individual would like to develop.
My communication style is culturally sensitive, attachment-based, and feminist-informed. I strive to create a safe, supportive space where you feel heard and understood. Through empathy, active listening, and collaborative dialogue, we will explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences at a pace that feels right for you.
I offer compassionate and evidence-based therapy to help you navigate life's difficulties. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or trauma, I can provide the support and tools you need to heal and grow. I'm here to listen without judgment and offer guidance on your journey toward healing and well-being. Together, we'll explore your thoughts and feelings, develop coping strategies, and build resilience. I believe in your ability to overcome challenges and achieve your goals. Through therapy, we'll work collaboratively to identify your strengths, develop practical solutions, and empower you to live a fulfilling life. I am available to clients across the state, allowing you to visit with me in the comfort of your home through telehealth, whether it be during the week or in the evenings or on weekends.
With nearly three decades of experience, I provide warm, collaborative therapy that fosters deep and lasting change. My practice, available to clients in Washington, DC, Maryland, and California, offers a dedicated space for thoughtful exploration -- a place to feel heard, understood, supported, and, yes, sometimes gently challenged. My goal is to help you gain a fresh perspective and cultivate the internal strength and resilience needed to move toward a more fulfilling life. Whether you're struggling with unsatisfying or difficult relationships, significant losses, navigating transitions, stress, anxiety, trauma, or perhaps you're simply feeling stuck or confused, together we will work to understand how your life experiences and choices shaped you, helping you find your own path forward with clarity and intention. Sometimes therapy will be focused on having the support and guidance to work through past experiences. Other times it will be providing the hope and scaffolding needed to discover aspects of yourself until you are confident enough to make personal changes. Often it is a blend of both of these things. Whatever you are experiencing, working with a therapist who offers compassion and a discerning ear provides a unique relationship where the focus is on you, your challenges and your potential for growth. When you're ready to explore what’s been weighing on you, let's meet in a space created specifically to feel heard and understood. I offer highly personalized therapy while ensuring the process remains practical and effective. In addition to talk therapy I may integrate mind-body techniques such as somatic awareness, EMDR, and 12-Step support when appropriate. My goal is to help you tap into your strengths and emotional resilience, while supporting you in making meaningful changes that lead to a richer, more rewarding life. If you’re wondering whether we’d be a good fit, I offer a complimentary 20-minute phone consultation. This call is an opportunity to discuss your needs and for you to ask any questions. To schedule, please email me at nrmeyer@depthpsychotherapydc.com, with your name, phone number, and availability. Please don’t include personal details in your initial email. I have been working in the helping field related to counseling for almost 20 years. In that time I have learned that the best way to help others is to be an excellent listener, to be compassionate, empathetic, and to collaborate with individuals to assist them in gaining the tools that they need to make positive change in their lives. I work hard to encourage clients that the strength for change lies within them and my job is to help them find it. I utilize a great deal of mindfulness based techniques and believe that learning the process of becoming more mindful in life can be extremely beneficial to problem solving and learning to sit with discomfort. As a counselor I do not believe that I have all of the answers or can fix anyone, however, I do believe that if the client is willing to do the work to create change in their life that I can assist them in doing so successfully. Ultimately, my goal for the counseling relationship is to assist clients in managing stress more effectively and learning skills that can be used well after the counseling relationship has terminated, in a straightforward and honest approach.
Stressed? Overwhelmed? Struggling with making life decisions? Congratulations! You've taken the first step towards seeking change. Listening to intuition and addressing what distresses you is a sign of strength. Respect, empathy, support, active listening, collaboration and confidentiality are a top priority and values that guide my practice. I welcome the opportunity to work with you to uncover your inner strengths and live your life reaching towards your fullest potential. Self-discovery and awareness occur in the context of a working therapeutic relationship; reasons why I feel the fit between therapist and patient is so important. I encourage you to follow your inner voice about what feels right when searching for a therapist. Each patient and couple is unique and therefore I use an individually tailored eclectic and flexible approach integrating techniques from various modalities depending on patients' needs. I encourage individuals and couples to be active participants in their treatment enabling them to explore previously undiscovered aspects of themselves. Within the context of the therapeutic relationship, patients can explore patterns of behavior related to beliefs, attitudes and past experiences. I would be happy to speak with you during a complimentary phone consultation. I warmly welcome your call or email.
I help individuals with issues such as depression, anxiety, relationships challenges, childhood trauma, stress, and families navigating behavioral issues. I teach my clients communication skills that improve their relationships. Those skills boost my clients' power and voice, as well as their intimacy with their significant others. I rely on a number of approaches, including Gestalt, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, somatic experiencing, and experiential dynamic psychotherapy. I help clients dealing with traumatic stress reduce panic, pain, numbness and hyper-arousal in response to life and relationships difficulties. I combine calming and relationship skills to help children, adolescents, and young adults reduce family discord and ADHD, and increase self-efficacy. I help my clients navigate their behaviors, emotions, cognition, and physiology. I help couples and individuals explore the ways that small changes in attitudes and stances can nurture new ways of feeling, thinking, and being in the world. I help my clients find new solutions so they can connect with a sense of joy and competence.
My primary treatment approach is cognitive-behavioral which is solution-focused and generally shorter-term, however, in reality, we all generally benefit from a variety of therapeutic strategies and i will often utilize complementary and eclectic techniques that enables a more personalized treatment approach and relies on best practices for your specific issues. You will find me to be an active and engaged therapist and we will work together in a team-oriented and collaborative style. I often recommend activities to practice between sessions, and these might include a journal, trying out new communication skills and problem-solving or coping techniques that we have practiced, brief reading assignments, some research, relaxation techniques, and a variety of other options. I believe humor is an important element in the therapeutic process, and to life in general, and I strive to create a relaxing and trusting environment with my clients. I am very happy to answer any questions you might have, and if I am unsure, I will do all that I can to help point you in the right direction. I consider it an honor to assist clients on their personal journey in therapy. Participating in therapy is an important step in reclaiming your happiness and satisfaction and I take me role in providing assistance on that journey seriously as I appreciate the time, cost, and emotional investment of this choice.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Virginia. Born and raised in Iowa, I attended Iowa State University, graduating with a double major in Child, Adult, and Family Services and Spanish. I have traveled and lived in many places throughout the world, and have developed an appreciation for the differences we all have, but also the similarities that unite us. I received my master’s degree from Rutgers University. In my 18 years of work experience, I have worked supporting children, adolescents, and families. That experience includes working with trauma, depression, anxiety, school related anxiety and refusal, conflict between parents and children, involvement in the juvenile justice system, immigration stress and trauma, and crisis intervention. I have experience in child and adolescent therapy, family therapy, parenting, group therapy, and school-based mental health. I meet the child and family where they are on their journey and works collaboratively to develop realistic goals that will improve functioning in all environments. I utilize a strengths-based, solution-focused and family systems approach. I encourage children and families to share their culture and integrate the unique cultural experiences of families into treatment. I enjoy spending time outside, watching movies, reading books, and crocheting. I also enjoy various forms of exercise, like weightlifting and yoga. I enjoy watching (and sometimes playing) sports. I bring creativity and energy to my practice and am mindful and strategic about interventions used when working with children and families. Mental health is an important part of our being. Just like we eat food to feed our physical body, we must also get what we need to be mentally and emotionally resilient.
