The quality and nature of the therapeutic relationship is the single greatest contributor to a beneficial outcome from psychotherapy. The foundation of the therapeutic relationship is mutual trust. How this trust develops is unique to every therapeutic relationship, but you must come to believe that you can be your honest and open self within the therapy space for any change or healing to take place. As you come to better understand yourself in the therapy space, you can consider how to best bring yourself into the outside world. The therapeutic relationship can help to nurture and support you on this self-guided journey of discovery and change.

I will strive to create a safe and nonjudgmental space for you to explore yourself. I will ask you to verbalize your feelings and the motivations behind your behavior. I will pull on the threads of your ideas so that you can see where they come from and where they will lead. I will challenge you to go one step farther than you think that you can and I expect you to tell me if and when we might be moving too fast. I will encourage you to bring your honest, authentic self into the therapy space; I will do the same. I will help you come to better understand who you are and how you can be you in the world.
