Starting on the path of counseling or therapy can be a bit intimidating. However, it doesn’t have to be. Working in a friendly and caring environment, and with a kind, understanding, and caring counselor, can make the process easier, more comfortable, and even fun. Sometimes we may feel as though we are malfunctioning or broken, but I don’t believe anyone is actually broken. They are just doing something, or behaving in a way, that they would like to change. The trick is to find a new way, an enjoyable way, a way that rejuvenates, reinvigorates, and brings zest to life. Finding that new way may feel a little strange or difficult at first, but that’s part of the fun; trying on new patterns of thinking and behaving to see what fits, and what we like best. Working in a safe and relaxed environment can help in this process, because it helps us to feel comfortable and assured. When counseling and therapy are done purposefully and cooperatively, learning, developing, and incorporating the new strategies and patterns can be a pleasant and enjoyable journey.
