I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, specializing in couples and relationships. I have 13 years of experience working in multiple settings including private practice, out-patient substance abuse clinics, schools, and various centers. I provide a free 20 minute phone consultation for us to get to know one another, discuss your current concerns, and make sure we are the best fit for one another. Feel free to call to get your free 20 minute consultation today.
My therapeutic approach is eclectic and is continually informed through a wide range of studies and continuous training. However, the primary approach I utilize is Gestalt. In principle and practice, this means that I am concerned with your experiences as lived and understood by you. This work tends to focus more on the here and now of your experiences, which includes bodily awareness and how the past may be showing up in the present. My aim is to support you in increasing your awareness of yourself and ability to stay present with your own experiences. Most importantly, Gestalt utilizes a more active approach in therapy. In session, we will get to experiment with new ways of being. Through this approach, you will get to experience change rather than just talk about it! If you are into video games, tabletop games, comic books, anime, sci-fi, animated series, fantasy media, etc., then we could be a great therapeutic fit! Geek Therapy can allow us to build rapport through shared language and interests. We can get right to the core of what you want to talk about without spending session time explaining basic terms, mechanics, or concepts. This shared space of understanding provides us the context through which to explore your feelings, thoughts, and experiences. And even more than exploration, it can also provide us with useful tools to support you in your therapeutic work. For more detailed information about my background, approach, and services, please visit my website or feel free to contact me via e-mail or phone.
I am a systemic therapist. As I work with you individually, as a couple, or as a family, I will consider your relationships and other contextual factors. If you are seeking help for difficulties in your marriage or family, I will encourage your spouse andor family to be involved because I believe it is the most effective way to help you solve a variety of challenges. At the beginning of therapy, I will ask you questions to help me understand the issues that bring you to see me. I will gather some background information but will mostly focus on the present and your preferred future. We will set goals together and work collaboratively to identify the strengths you have to fulfill these goals. Once you feel you have achieved these goals, therapy will be over. The length of therapy varies for each person and depends on your goals.
My approach to therapy is primarily based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). A core idea in ACT is that trying too hard to get rid of or control our emotions tends to backfire. Instead of trying to get rid of unwanted thoughts and feelings, I will help you learn to react differently to them so that you can keep your focus on living a meaningful and fulfilling life based on what’s important to you. We will work together to set meaningful goals to address your concerns–whether they relate to life transitions, depression, anxiety, body image, grief or loss, job or academic stress, or gender and sexuality.
Arguing with your partner every day feels exhausting! Does it feel like you're going 10 rounds with your partner every time you try to talk? The house atmosphere feels tense, like you are walking on eggshells. Maybe you are afraid to bring up concerns just to avoid conflict. Verbal daggers are creeping into everyday discussions with your spouse. You are jumping from topic to topic and never really getting anything settled. Most couples fight over the silliest of things. How can marriage counseling help? Maybe you are thinking it is too late. The number one reason couples reach out to a marriage counselor is to help with communication. The communication is either not good from the start, or somewhere along the line, it broke. Fixing communication is not impossible. I will provide specific tools, such as taking timeouts, learning how to state needs and emotions assertively, and how to compromise to create a shared solution where both partners feel heard and understood. I use tools from the Gottman Institute, Prepare and Enrich, and my own communication patterns that I've developed working with couples in my practice. When we are not on the same page with our partner, it is because we are in two different communication patterns. One of the most common ones is venting and fixing. One partner simply wants to vent to their partner, while the partner hears what is being said and tries to give advice, or tell their partner how to fix the problem, instead of just listening and giving empathy. I teach empathy skills. Marriages can be mended and repaired. Let's strengthen your relationship together! Call, text, or email me.
