I’m Dr. Joe Yanni, a licensed psychologist with over two decades of experience supporting adolescents, adults, and families through life’s challenges. My work is grounded in trust, compassion, and a desire to help people move forward, both emotionally and practically. I understand that no two people are the same, which is why I use an integrated approach, a research-informed model that blends cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic theory, humanistic care, and lifestyle-based strategies. Therapy should feel both collaborative and tailored, not clinical or scripted. In addition to my own work with clients, I oversee a team of dedicated professionals at Psychological Services of New York, P.C. Together, we provide thoughtful, individualized care to meet a wide range of therapeutic needs. My staff and I provide in-person therapy at my Westchester locations in Scarsdale, NY and Pleasantville, NY, as well as virtually.
Welcome! I'm Alexa. I help people move from a state of survival to one of true authenticity and aliveness. People I work with are often caught in cycles of overthinking, perfectionism, unfulfilling relationships, or uncertainty about what’s next. My practice is built for those ready to move beyond surface-level coping and create real, sustainable shifts in how they feel and connect. Clinically, I take a two-pronged approach: 1) Understanding: We’ll explore why you think, feel, and act the way you do. We’ll dig into your core beliefs, defenses, attachment style, and how past experiences may still be influencing you today. 2) Shifting: We’ll work together to shift the mindsets and behaviors that no longer serve you by incorporating research-backed modalities that will help you break free from unhelpful patterns. My style is warm, collaborative, and deeply present. I draw from psychodynamic and relational approaches while integrating evidence-based tools like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and emotionally focused therapy (EFT), to bring both depth and practicality to the work. In therapy, we untangle long-held patterns, heal the parts shaped by shame or self-doubt, and build a stronger sense of self that can navigate life with more ease and authenticity. I strive to create a space where you can show up as your full self—where every part of you is welcome, even the ones you’ve hidden. We move at your pace, guided by curiosity, humility, and honesty. I also integrate an understanding of how early life experiences—beginning as far back as the womb—affect us both psychologically and physiologically. Healing often means reconnecting with your inner child and developing a more compassionate, grounded relationship with yourself.
My goal is to provide counseling, psychotherapy and treatment for individuals, couples and families struggling with a variety of psychological and mental health issues including stress, relationships, marital problems, depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol, eating disorders, learning disability attention problems etc... As the Coordinator of Campus Alcohol and Substance Awareness at Temple University and as the past Assistant Director of Student Health and Counseling at The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia I have a lot of experience working with clients facing all the above issues and more. I believe that counseling is a collaborative process where clients sort out their thoughts and feelings in order to get a better understanding of who they are. My approach is eclectic or integrative but I use many psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral approaches in my work. I trust that clients know deep down what should be talked about in therapy and that they mostly need help knowing how to access these thoughts and feelings in order to realize what it is they want and need from others and their lives. I am very open to sharing my personal thoughts and experiences as a way of helping others. I find that it often helps patients to know that their therapist is a human being too and much can be learned from the relationship of therapy. Many clients come to a therapists office because they struggling in their relationships. Paying attention to how your relationship develops with your therapist can help you understand how the really important relationships in your life outside of the therapeutic relationship work.
My work with individuals, families and couples focuses on Life’s journey and the challenges faced along the way. Insight and understanding of one’s relationships with self and others helps you to grow, heal and change to reach your individual potential. My goal is to provide a safe environment and therapeutic relationship where my clients can grow and and understand relationship issues as well as workplace stress. By learning to manage stress, depression and anxiety, I help my clients to create the space they need to reach their potential and continue on a journey that may have become stalled.
Do you carry more than you show? You might be a therapist, caregiver, or capable professional who’s always holding it together, while feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck inside. You’ve done the work. You’re self-aware. But something still isn’t shifting. There’s nothing wrong with you; your nervous system may need a different kind of support. That’s where I come in. I offer emotionally intelligent care that helps your system regulate and reset so healing doesn’t depend on willpower alone. My approach blends trauma-informed therapy with two powerful tools: neurofeedback brain training and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). These methods support the brain and body directly. They help you access clarity, calm, and relief, especially when talk therapy hasn't been enough. Some clients work with me as their primary therapist. Others already have a trusted therapist, and we collaborate—your therapist holds the foundation, and I support movement when things feel stuck. Together, we go at your pace. We all have gifts from God, and I believe helping people to heal is one of my gifts. We are all on a journey of self discovery. All aspects of our life including the work that we do, the people that come into our lives, and the things that happen to us all provide an opportunity for growth and deepening our connection with ourselves and others. I have known I wanted to be a therapist since I was 13, because it was the first time when I saw a therapist that someone actually tuned into my feelings. Through this experience, I felt seen and truly began to see myself. The most valuable subject we can learn about to be successful in life is ourselves! How are we supposed to navigate through our lives without knowing ourselves? How can we be centered if we do not understand some underlying principles about psychology, such as how we interpret our environment, defense mechanisms we employ to protect ourselves from pain, and the mind-body-spirit connection? How can we navigate the many ups and downs of life without this knowledge? We cannot; we will be lost! That is why there is so much suffering in our world, because individually, as families, and as a society we are trying to navigate our lives without truly understanding and healing ourselves. Through understanding and healing, it helps to stop years of negative multi-generational patterns in families and helps to promote a deeper, happier more peaceful connection within and with others, which in turn, makes our world a better place.
As a licensed marital and family therapist, I have years of experience working with individuals, couples and families faced with a wide variety of challenges and life cycle transitions. I offer a supportive, empathic and nonjudgmental environment in which to discover, heal and grow. My approach is individualized, holistic, solution-focused and collaborative. Together, we will create a plan to help you reach your goals and overcome challenges. With you as the expert on yourself, my role is to provide you with insight, strategies, coaching and tools. My goal is to help you feel empowered and motivated to reach your full potential.
Do you need help with managing your stress, a transition, help practicing self care, processing trauma, navigating relationship challenges or taking the next step towards your purpose? We utilize evidence based, trauma informed, strength based, cognitive behavioral and person-focused approaches to help you learn coping strategies for these areas of your life. We also help you learn how to set boundaries and learn how to better care for yourself. This practice was founded with the belief that there is power and courage in telling your story. The group has performed for agencies, care facilities, colleges, schools, and conferences. They have depicted conditions such as posttraumatic stress, eating issues, bipolar, dementia, and schizophrenia. Morris County health officials hope to educate caregivers, families, and professionals on the symptoms of mental health.
