As a seasoned clinical social worker, marriage and family therapist and with a passion for working with couples and along with a specialty in sex therapy, my 25 years of experience being with individuals, couples, and families is deeply gratifying personally and professionally. Believing that as human beings we are " hardwired to connect "and protest when we're not being heard, understood or getting our needs met, I am committed to collaboratively working to nurture and strengthen our relationship with ourselves and with others in our lives. The importance of being present, compassionate and providing a safe space is what inspires me to help those struggling with challenges, to change and heal from stress, pain, and trauma, and to repair and enhance relationship bonds.
Does it feel as though you're going through life without a sense of equilibrium? Do seemingly routine tasks fill you with dread and anxiety? Are you filled with a sense of hopelessness, that things will never get better, and do you feel guilty for even thinking this way? These are patterns that I am very familiar with, and I want to help you to uncover the root causes of them, as well as give you tools that will help you build healthier habits. We often have a narrative we tell ourselves that we think covers the full story of our lives, and determines our future. Does this sound familiar? I find that by simply listening actively to clients and pointing out when their story sounds incomplete or unfair, we can work towards creating a new story that includes more hope and self-care. My approach to therapy is highly collaborative, and I feel that building a strong therapeutic relationship is fundamental in providing relief to what troubles you. I want to hear anything and everything about you, no matter how random or irrelevant it may seem to be at first; often there's great insight in what comes from the unconscious mind, and therapy is a safe space for it to come to the fore. I do love to talk and listen to people talk, but this isn't always the best or fastest way to get to the root of the issue. As a certified music therapist, I can also guide us into creative approaches to the issues at hand.
Are you struggling in your relationships? Relationships can be complicated, and it is natural for people to see things differently. Yet, some of life’s greatest joys come from the connections we build with our loved ones. The quality of our relationships deeply impacts our overall well-being. If you are feeling stuck in unhealthy patterns, caught in the same arguments, or unsure if things can truly improve, you’re not alone. If you feel hopeless about the future of your relationship and are unsure whether to stay or go, you don’t have to navigate this alone. If you are facing conflict, trust issues, or lingering emotional wounds, support is available—healing is possible. With over a decade of professional experience, I have developed a deep understanding of the complexities that shape our relationships. Using evidence-based psychotherapy methods, I work closely with clients to help them navigate challenges, heal from past wounds, and foster personal growth. My approach is warm, compassionate, and collaborative—empowering clients to gain insight into thought patterns, beliefs, and behaviors that may be holding them back. Together, we will develop healthy coping strategies and rebuild strong, fulfilling relationships with yourself and those you love. I integrate a range of therapeutic modalities, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Relational Life Therapy (RLT), The Gottman Method, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), tailoring my approach to each client’s unique needs. Additionally, I offer Brainspotting, a highly effective method for processing traumatic memories and alleviating emotional distress. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of counseling thousands of individuals, couples, and families, leading seminars worldwide, and publishing articles—all with the goal of helping people heal, grow, and create deeper, more meaningful connections. If you’re ready to take the next step in your healing journey, I would be honored to support you in creating the life and relationships you deserve. Reach out today, and let’s start this transformative journey together.
I’ve been helping teens for 35 yrs and have a good read on the challenges they face and the strategies that are effective in relieving the anxiety, disillusionment, depression, anger, and disconnection that plague so many families. I help teens who are anxious, argumentative, defiant, withdrawn, moody, self-destructive, inattentive, depressed, or doing poorly in school and will help you decide whether the problems you're noticing are part of "typical" teen behavior or a sign of something more serious. I'm also very sensitive to the fact that many children and adolescents aren't interested in counseling and will try to avoid going, even when they themselves know they need help. I believe, however, that by approaching kids with an updated model of therapy offering lively, thought-provoking conversation, genuine contact with a credible adult and a ton of respect, we can get their attention, their engagement, and their willingness to examine things with a fresh eye. That’s what led to my newest book, Therapeutic Conversations with Adolescents: Helping Teens in Therapy Thrive in an Ultra-Competitive, Screen-Saturated World, which reflects my belief that adolescent therapy has needed a new paradigm in order to appeal to today’s kids — something where they wouldn’t be hounded by dumb questions or talked down to, something where they’d find themselves actually wanting to talk. Please visit my website - janetedgette.com - where you'll find many articles on parenting teenagers as well as the free download, "9 Things Your Teenager Wished You Understood Better." You can also check out some of my other books, including Stop Negotiating With Your Teen: Strategies for Parenting Your Angry, Moody, Manipulative or Depressed Adolescent and The Last Boys Picked: Helping Boys Who Don't Play Sports Survive Bullies and Boyhood, and my popular article, "Why Teens Hate Therapy." Examples of the problems I treat: academic decline, moody or manipulative behavior, depression, withdrawal from family, anxiety, problems making or keeping friends, poor self-image or self-esteem, unexplained sadness, self-destructive choices, disrespect toward parents, avoiding responsibility, chronic conflict or tension or disagreements at home, emotional distancing from parents, poor conduct (aggressive, evasive, intimidating), among many other types of issues or conditions. Call or write me. Let's see if I'm the right person to work with you and your family.

It may be a little unorthodox to introduce my practice to you on a negative note. But the truth is that what brought me to Goodtherapy was..."not-good therapy"! My own, as patient. With an intelligent, highly trained practitioner, who knows how to practice good therapy...and didn't. This got me thinking: How is it that good therapists go...off track? Gold standard skills, compassion, caring, empathy...are, evidently, not enough. I believe I found the missing piece. To be a good therapist is to be humble. Humility in action is the foundation of safety and success in treatment. Humility keeps a therapist open, curious, and honest - and keeps this honesty respectful. It acknowledges your power as a patient - to really let me know how my words and actions affect you, knowing this helps me help you. Emotional pain is rooted in lived experience, and only new experience can touch it. Symptoms are distressing, but feeling trapped, alone, or unreachable within them is...unbearable. It's likely that the emotional events that caused your distress were experienced in this way: Alone and unbearable. Therapy is a healing conversation, and it heals by giving you a new experience, one that unfolds as you relate your experience to me, and I relate to you. So we undo your aloneness together; you'll find me respectfully wondering about little things I notice, moment to moment, as you tell your story - the glimpses of feeling that accompany your words - the music of your problem, so to speak. This is a gentle process, and very, very powerful. It orients you to yourself and your "problem" in a new way - with safety, sometimes surprising speed, and depth. Humility in action give me the power to heal, and is the basis of the two models I rely on to help others (Sue Johnson's EFT for couples and families, and Diana Fosha's AEDP for individuals. "Undoing aloneness" is a term of Dr. Fosha's). This site provides good information on both.
