I strive to maintain a genuine, caring, and welcoming atmosphere for a strong and collaborative counseling relationship to flourish.
I strive to maintain a genuine, caring, and welcoming atmosphere for a strong and collaborative counseling relationship to flourish.
My goal in counseling is to meet individuals where they are and assist them on their journey to emotional wellness. I am light-hearted, yet direct. I am supportive and seek to always encourage them in finding their strength. I believe active listening and rephrasing are key to ensuring that I as the therapist hear each client. So I frequently seek to confirm what is being said.
I am dedicated to the practice and research of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples who are struggling and interested in improving their relationships. EFT is one of the few evidence based practices for improving relationships. I have specialized expertise in treating depression along with relationship problems.
I have a passion for guiding others through some of their toughest times and assisting in their recovery. I also have a strength-based approach, which has assisted in the success of my clients. Some of my strengths are in processing subject matter such as victims-survivors of narcissistic abuse, anxiety management, healthy relationship development, self-esteem, perfectionism, life transitions, life goal processing, adolescent matters, bereavement, families affected by addiction, and the complexity of working in the educational and medical working environments.
I view psychotherapy as a collaborative process of self-discovery that is both supportive and directive. As many problems stem from either escalating emotions or efforts to avoid them, time is spent exploring and trying to understand your distress to help you create a more satisfying and healthier way of living. To inform my work, I draw from three areas of theoretical research: cognitive behavioral theory (skills-focused), attachment theory (insight-focused), and neuroscience research (psychoeducation-focused re: the mind-body connection and physical response to trauma). When we listen to our emotions without judgment and try to understand what they are telling us, more often than not, we can figure out what we need to regain emotional peace, balance, and life satisfaction. Many of my clients are highly successful on the outside; leaders in their field, individuals who handle intense and stressful jobs. They are the ones that other people look to for insight and guidance. But on the inside, these clients often carry a great deal of weight from past difficulties, including feelings of tremendous anxiety, self-loathing, shame, and low-grade chronic depression, because they have never received the expertise needed to truly overcome their past experiences and maladaptive coping strategies they have developed. I bring my 30 years of experience as a trauma researcher, clinician, teacher, and clinical supervisor to every one of my sessions. I find my work inspiring and a privilege. Through our work together, my clients find someone who has the years of experience and expertise to create the sense of security needed to explore and understand these difficulties, and finally overcome them.
I began working in this field almost 30 years ago because I wanted to make a tangible difference in people's lives. Over the years, I have worked with countless individuals, couples, families, and groups to help them improve their quality of life. Through my experience, I have learned that: Although many may appear to be similar demographically in terms of age, race, gender, socioeconomic status, religion, etc., everyone brings hisher own individual histories to therapy -- histories that distinguish each client as a unique individual. As a result, I welcome all clients, and I recognize that each client will bring hisher own history and values to therapy. I commit to working within each individual's system of values as I try to help the individual draw from hisher history to improve hisher quality of life. My two primary metrics are: a) tangible improvements in an individual's life, and b) the individual's feelings and understanding regarding change and the process of change. Like physical therapists and coaches who are willing to challenge their athletes to perform at full potential, I am willing to challenge my clients to reach their full potential in life. But my guiding philosophy is: "challenge by choice" -- I will only as far and as fast as my clients are comfortable.
Are you experiencing a wide range of emotions? Are you going thru a difficult transition at this time in your life and find it hard to get your needs met? These experiences can cause anxiety and or depression. Sometimes it helps to talk to someone who can give you some much-needed empathy, offer some insight and and relate to what you are going through. I am willing to guide you through the storm and assist you with finding some peace of mind. I am a Psychotherapist specializing in transition issues, anxiety, depression, and relationship conflict, as well as codependents involved in a narcissistic relationship. My philosophy is to meet my clients where they are using an eclectic approach and to help them understand their behavior patterns, gain insight into their past and current challenges and help them feel empowered in their daily life. I am also a Life Coach focusing on transformation, self-esteem and self-sabotage, mind-body balance and productivity. Change is hard. Chronic stress can sneak up on you. I've been there too. If you are feeling overwhelmed or unsure of the next step to take, don't hesitate to reach out for a lifeline. You don't have to stay anxious and or depressed. Therapy and coaching have been around for a long time. An abundance of clinical research shows they are a proven method of helping to create change, positivity and, most importantly, a meaningful life.
I believe that a person moves in and out of their various life stages with the desire to learn, and sometimes re-learn, life lessons. I work with clients to enhance self-awareness, insight, and skill sets for managing life. Our therapeutic experience will be a joint effort in reaching your goals! I work with adult couples struggling in their relationships, communication, and living styles over all stages of life. I work with children and teens in their social, emotional, educational, and family systems. I see adults attempting to clarify and reach life goals involving education, work, independence, esteem, and healthy relationships. Learning how to regulate emotion, think flexibly, and develop the ability to better tolerate stress is my goal in empowering clients.
It's time now to genuinely feel and function better. In order to do that, it's essential to pay close attention to your internal responses to the difficulties and patterns that have been cropping up in your closest relationships, your work, and with respect to your own self-concept, and to do so with someone who can help you see things differently and perhaps more accurately. Together, we will create an open, accepting, safe space, where you also will feel helpfully and persistently challenged to know yourself much better from the inside out, and as quickly as possible.
If you’ve been through something hard—like trauma, loss, or a stressful life event—you might feel stuck, sad, anxious, or unsure of what to do next. You are not alone. I’m here to help. I’m a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Maryland, and I’ve been helping people through tough times for almost 10 years. I work with adults who are dealing with posttraumatic stress (PTSD), anxiety, depression, grief, and other mental health challenges. I use a therapy called cognitive processing therapy (CPT). It’s a type of talk therapy that helps you understand how trauma may have changed the way you think about yourself, other people, and the world. Sometimes, people blame themselves for what happened, or believe things like, “I’m not safe,” or “It was all my fault.” In therapy, we work together to find more helpful and true ways of thinking. My style as a therapist is kind, easy to talk to, and never judgmental. You can be yourself in our sessions. I believe that healing happens when you feel safe, respected, and understood. I will always meet you where you are and help you move at your own pace. You don’t need to have all the answers before starting therapy. You just need to be open to taking the first step. Whether you want short-term help or want to work on things more deeply, I’m here to support you. I offer both in-person and online sessions, depending on what works best for you. If you're ready to start healing or just want to learn more, I’d be glad to talk with you.
I help children, adults, and adolescents who struggle with behavioral, emotional, and relationship challenges by providing guidance and support through active listening and communication to overcome obstacles, utilizing calming techniques and guided imagery through Neurofeedback to alleviate symptoms related to health and behavior conditions. As well as improving focus, attention, and memory by training your brain to maximize achievement, performance, and productivity. My approach is to tailor to the needs of my clients, including applying a variety of techniques, from cognitive-behavioral therapy, art therapy, and play therapy. I use evidence-based treatment methods, and my goal is to aid you in helping yourself.
With nearly three decades of experience, I provide warm, collaborative therapy that fosters deep and lasting change. My practice, available to clients in Washington, DC, Maryland, and California, offers a dedicated space for thoughtful exploration -- a place to feel heard, understood, supported, and, yes, sometimes gently challenged. My goal is to help you gain a fresh perspective and cultivate the internal strength and resilience needed to move toward a more fulfilling life. Whether you're struggling with unsatisfying or difficult relationships, significant losses, navigating transitions, stress, anxiety, trauma, or perhaps you're simply feeling stuck or confused, together we will work to understand how your life experiences and choices shaped you, helping you find your own path forward with clarity and intention. Sometimes therapy will be focused on having the support and guidance to work through past experiences. Other times it will be providing the hope and scaffolding needed to discover aspects of yourself until you are confident enough to make personal changes. Often it is a blend of both of these things. Whatever you are experiencing, working with a therapist who offers compassion and a discerning ear provides a unique relationship where the focus is on you, your challenges and your potential for growth. When you're ready to explore what’s been weighing on you, let's meet in a space created specifically to feel heard and understood. I offer highly personalized therapy while ensuring the process remains practical and effective. In addition to talk therapy I may integrate mind-body techniques such as somatic awareness, EMDR, and 12-Step support when appropriate. My goal is to help you tap into your strengths and emotional resilience, while supporting you in making meaningful changes that lead to a richer, more rewarding life. If you’re wondering whether we’d be a good fit, I offer a complimentary 20-minute phone consultation. This call is an opportunity to discuss your needs and for you to ask any questions. To schedule, please email me at nrmeyer@depthpsychotherapydc.com, with your name, phone number, and availability. Please don’t include personal details in your initial email. You’re also welcome to reach me by phone at 202-527-4848.
