I strive to provide a safe and calm environment where my clients feel heard and supported as we navigate the complexities of life and work together to achieve their goals.
I'm an active listener who listens without judgment. I provide reflection while working to understand your concerns and to help clarify issues.
Do you have ruminations that are self-critical? Do you avoid going out or joining social activities? Or maybe you become overwhelmed by anger, fear, shame, dread? Life doesn't have to be that hard. I believe that our behavior patterns are old ways of surviving difficult situations. I bring years of personal and professional experiences and training to foster a safe and collaborative relationship to be curious about your responses, update your system, so to speak, and learn and practice new skills.
My primary treatment approach is cognitive-behavioral which is solution-focused and generally shorter-term, however, in reality, we all generally benefit from a variety of therapeutic strategies and i will often utilize complementary and eclectic techniques that enables a more personalized treatment approach and relies on best practices for your specific issues. You will find me to be an active and engaged therapist and we will work together in a team-oriented and collaborative style. I often recommend activities to practice between sessions, and these might include a journal, trying out new communication skills and problem-solving or coping techniques that we have practiced, brief reading assignments, some research, relaxation techniques, and a variety of other options. I believe humor is an important element in the therapeutic process, and to life in general, and I strive to create a relaxing and trusting environment with my clients. I am very happy to answer any questions you might have, and if I am unsure, I will do all that I can to help point you in the right direction. I consider it an honor to assist clients on their personal journey in therapy. Participating in therapy is an important step in reclaiming your happiness and satisfaction and I take me role in providing assistance on that journey seriously as I appreciate the time, cost, and emotional investment of this choice.
With nearly three decades of experience, I provide warm, collaborative therapy that fosters deep and lasting change. My practice, available to clients in Washington, DC, Maryland, and California, offers a dedicated space for thoughtful exploration -- a place to feel heard, understood, supported, and, yes, sometimes gently challenged. My goal is to help you gain a fresh perspective and cultivate the internal strength and resilience needed to move toward a more fulfilling life. Whether you're struggling with unsatisfying or difficult relationships, significant losses, navigating transitions, stress, anxiety, trauma, or perhaps you're simply feeling stuck or confused, together we will work to understand how your life experiences and choices shaped you, helping you find your own path forward with clarity and intention. Sometimes therapy will be focused on having the support and guidance to work through past experiences. Other times it will be providing the hope and scaffolding needed to discover aspects of yourself until you are confident enough to make personal changes. Often it is a blend of both of these things. Whatever you are experiencing, working with a therapist who offers compassion and a discerning ear provides a unique relationship where the focus is on you, your challenges and your potential for growth. When you're ready to explore what’s been weighing on you, let's meet in a space created specifically to feel heard and understood. I offer highly personalized therapy while ensuring the process remains practical and effective. In addition to talk therapy I may integrate mind-body techniques such as somatic awareness, EMDR, and 12-Step support when appropriate. My goal is to help you tap into your strengths and emotional resilience, while supporting you in making meaningful changes that lead to a richer, more rewarding life. If you’re looking for therapy, you may be feeling discouraged, misunderstood, or unsure how to repair the emotional distance that’s developed between you and your partner. Maybe you love each other deeply, but can’t seem to stop the cycle of miscommunication or conflict. I understand how painful that can feel—and I want you to know that healing and connection are possible. My work focuses on helping couples rediscover their friendship, deepen their emotional intimacy, and learn skills that allow them to navigate differences with compassion and respect. Drawing from the Gottman Method and Prepare-Enrich, I use evidence-based approaches to help you understand what’s really happening beneath your interactions and to practice new ways of communicating that bring safety, empathy, and hope back into the relationship. You’ll find my style to be warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. Together, we’ll explore the patterns that keep you stuck, while also identifying the strengths that can move you forward. I believe therapy should be both a space for insight and for action—a place where couples can learn to listen, forgive, and rebuild a bond that reflects the best version of who they are together. All sessions are virtual telehealth, allowing for greater accessibility to therapy services, and are convenient for most people. My practice provides a confidential, compassionate space for couples and individuals seeking to strengthen their relationships and emotional well-being. Call or email to book your appointment today.

If we could think our way into the life we wanted, we would already be there. But healing and growth is not simply about thinking. It is about attending to our feelings, accepting ourselves where we are, and believing in possibilities. The Four Corners Counseling & Well-being way of therapy, practiced by the founder, Hetty Barnett, and all associates: For Thinking Women (and Men, too): Are you struggling to feel better about yourself and your life? If you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed, if your relationships are causing pain or confusion, we can help. We know from hard-earned experience that being an intelligent "over-functioner" does not mean we can easily soothe our emotional pain and create a balanced life. My associates and I can help you tap into your inner wisdom and strength to create the life you desire. For couples on the brink: At Four Corners Counseling & Well-being, we believe that couples deserve a safe space and a competent therapist to help them navigate their relationship, and move beyond problems to possibilities. This work is sacred, and couples who seek our help are doing so not only for themselves, but for the benefit of their children (if there are any), for their families, and for future generations. We have no pre-determined expectation of how a relationship will unfold. We do firmly believe that any work the members of a couple do to speak for their feelings (not from them) and listen to their partner from a grounded sense of self can reap many benefits in the future, no matter what the outcome. People can grow; people DO grow as they work with me. It takes a village to raise a relationship, and we want to be part of that village. Internal Family Systems (IFS) model of therapy: We are trained in IFS, the fastest growing therapy model today. As a clinical treatment, IFS has been rated effective for improving general functioning and well-being. In addition, it has been rated promising for improving phobia, panic, and generalized anxiety disorders; trauma resolution; physical health conditions; personal resilienceself-concept; and depression and depressive symptoms. Internal Family Systems can help clients learn ways to better relate to themselves, and move toward the 8 C’s of Self-Leadership: calmness, curiosity, clarity, compassion, confidence, creativity, courage, and connectedness.
I offer compassionate counseling services that help you to access greater wellness and connection in your life. I enjoy supporting my clients in navigating a range of life stages and transitions. I believe deeply in the healing role of an authentic and warm therapeutic relationship. I have a passion for helping my clients to gain new levels of insight, collaborating around creative and compassionate ways to address personal and professional concerns, facilitating a safe space to explore important identities and cultural experiences, as well as supporting my clients' development of healthy relationships with others that can foster long-term growth. If you have any questions about my practice, I am happy to answer! Please don't hesitate to reach out and we can schedule a brief consultation to determine possible fit in working together.
