My training as a mental health professional has taught me to be highly attuned to individuals' needs, with a strong desire to help my clients overcome life's difficulties. I know asking for help can be challenging, but I aim to build and maintain positive and effective therapeutic relationships built around the confidence and trust of my clients. In over a decade of experience, I have used a variety of approaches to meet my clients needs. I originally relied on cognitive-behavioral therapy, but I now use an eclectic approach, embracing psychoanalytic and existential approaches. I am also a licensed behavior specialist. I work with autism-spectrum clients to implement behavior programs that strengthen their skills and abilities. While in Europe, I gained expertise in progressive body relaxation.
Hey there! I'm Whitney, a Licensed Professional Counselor with over fifteen years of experience with a variety of populations ranging from young children to adults. My therapeutic approach is grounded in an existential model, but I also draw from various other forms of therapy to best support my clients. You can expect me to incorporate strategies and techniques from behavioral therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), as well as psychodynamic and family systems therapies. As a trauma-informed provider, I have received specialized training in treating trauma, shame, and anxiety. I'm passionate about staying up-to-date with the latest research and evidence-based practices and have specific training in understanding and managing ADHD across different phases of life. My ultimate goal is to provide a safe and empowering space for you to explore, grow, and overcome challenges. Together, we'll work towards helping you make choices that align with your goals and needs, fostering a sense of autonomy and personal fulfillment. I truly believe in creating a judgment-free environment where you can freely express your authentic self, embracing both the highs and lows of your unique path. I am here to support you in developing self-compassion and accepting the person you are today, despite the obstacles you have faced or are still working through. Additionally, I'm committed to helping you explore your desires, find meaning in your life, and discover the direction you want to pursue for a fulfilling future. I am an expert in providing psychotherapy (also called therapy or mental health counseling) to four main groups of people and their loved ones: Child and Adolescent Therapy, Young Adult Therapy, Sports Therapy, and Parenthood.
Life can be very confusing. When a person walks into a therapy room for the first time, they are often emotionally bruised and looking for some clarity about their world and their own responses to events and circumstances. It is a privilege for me as a therapist to help the people I work with to make sense of it all. I help my clients learn to listen to themselves with respect, compassion, and curiosity. People can develop this courageous curiosity when they learn to have faith that whatever they find out about themselves makes sense and is coming from a decent place. It is often difficult to cultivate the habit of validating one's own thoughts and feelings (especially if one has long experience of doing the opposite), but it is extremely rewarding as the changes begin to be noticeable.

Therapy is a journey that gives us the opportunity to find our genuine selves and ultimately become the best person we can be. Through therapy, profound and lasting change and growth can occur. I am a doctor of psychology as well as a licensed independent clinical social worker. I have deep expertise in working with addiction and recovery issues, alcoholism, as well as family, relationship, and couples issues. I have spent more than 20 years in the psychotherapy field. I work with adolescents and adults, in individual, family, and couple modalities. As a therapist, my approach to therapy is to meet you at your current place in life, and to support you to advance toward your objectives, work past obstacles, and attain supreme growth. I utilize various therapeutic approaches, comprising psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and strength-based techniques.
I provide individual and couples psychotherapy to adults and adolescents. I use an integration of various treatment modalities within a psychodynamic framework, providing my clients with the flexibility of treatment specific techniques while maintaining a focus on the therapeutic relationship and treatment alliance. Having healthy, positive relationships is integral to all aspects of our lives. I treat clients with mild to severe disorders and work in collaborative relationships with psychiatrists when medications are needed. I specialize in treating mood issues, anxiety issues, relationship, family issues, trauma, and sport psychology (performance enhancement, injury recovery, etc.). I was trained in the 1980's in Transpersonal Psychology. It is a model that focuses on the interplay of Western Psychology and Eastern Religion and Philosophy. As a Transpersonal Therapist, I recognize that each person has the power to heal and transform their own life. My role as a therapist is to help facilitate this process. Sometimes our life experiences negatively impact the way we think and behave. By co-creating a safe environment where you will feel comfortable sharing your story, we will examine the thoughts and feelings you are struggling with and develop different more healthy ways of relating to them. As you become more skillful with relating to your feeling and thoughts, you will begin to make more healthy choices; thus creating the life you desire.
I believe in the intrinsic worth of all human beings. I believe that many people do not see their value because it is overshadowed by the shame caused by their perceptions of who they should be and what they should be achieving. There are many reasons why these distortions exist; but one thing is for certain, it creates a feeling of being a fraud and deep shame. A lot of time and energy is used to counteract this secret shame. I feel that it is important to help teens and adults to become authentic and accepting of their strengths and weaknesses instead of putting our emotional and physical energy in denying and being afraid of our humanness. It is exhausting and paralyzing to be so afraid of our imperfections. I believe there is value in accepting our own humanity. We have to climb off our self imposed pedestal which is secretive and isolating and connect with other human beings without the fear of being discovered a fraud. It is so freeing and meaningful.
For 40 years I have been serving my community as a psychologist in private practice. My expertise is in helping individuals who are suffering with anxiety, depression and negative self image begin to see themselves differently and learn how they can take charge of their lives and experience the joy they were intended to feel. Working with a number of different modalities, my clients learn how to free themselves from negative and limiting self concepts. I take a very spiritual approach to my work. As a trinity, body, mind and spirit, shifting ones perspective and beginning to operate from a higher view often helps one overcome what seemed at one time to be impossible. We are joy seeking beings because joy is our natural state. When we once again come to know our true nature, we will naturally begin to feel more alive, joyful and ultimately more fulfilled.
I love doing therapy, because I believe it works, even when people have experienced long and difficult struggles. I love solving the new "puzzle" that each new person brings, and believe that solving that puzzle together makes us both feel hopeful and energized. People from all generations, personal situations, and walks of life are welcome in my office. I listen a lot, and I'm non-directive, but far from silent. I will provide as much structure as you need to feel comfortable, but try to stay out of your way as you develop your own insights and action plans. Building trust and rapport is important, and I will work hard to understand what you need to do that. We'll work together to stabilize distressing emotions and solve immediate real problems that are creating a crisis, then collaborate on longer-term goals to understand causes and old patterns so that new strengths and strategies can grow.
